We bought this as a last ditch attempt to be able to use the shower in a new apartment. The water is very hard where we live, and the kit comes with test strips to verify your water quality before and after fitting the system. We did a control test using distilled water to check the efficiency of the strips and then tested our water supply to confirm the hardness. Edit: I am writing an update as of December 13 that soft water care has emailed me back with a solution that I am satisfied with. They agreed to send replacement parts at no cost which is good. I appreciated the transparency and I have updated it to 4 stars due to my satisfaction with soft water care for the process of making things right. I've had this softener for about 2 months now and I do really like it but there are some downsides. The softer water certainly outweighs the downsides but just something to be aware of. The main one is that the recharging process is pretty tedious. I purchased before the upgraded version came out so keep that in mind but even just dissolving 2 pounds of salt in 1.3 gallons is more work than you think. Overall, we're happy with the Soft Water Care water softener! We were able to make it work well for our rental apartment tub shower and it's hardly in the way of anything. Our water is soft and we've noticed a definite difference in our skin and hair.
