Gives me the extra space I need to machine my integral barrels in the 4th Axis. I purchased a second plate like this which I will share full pictures of the tail stock mounted on a big plate too. I just need to move the Renshaw when I add the second plate. I been on a production run so hopefully I’ll get it moved in a couple days and share that really soon. I LOVE THESE PLATES!!!

These work excellently with Thorlabs "optical breadboard" (aluminum plate with 1/4-20 holes on 1" spacing). We happened to get a large Thorlabs plates donated to our student machine shop, and I wanted some alignment pin holes. I was torn between drilling/reaming out some of the threaded holes into alignment pin holes, making new holes in between the threaded ones, or... [enter Saunders Machine Works] just screw 2 of these into the bottom of the plate to make alignment with our t-slots easy, ...

Made my own Saunders fixture plate, with nothing less than 390 M12 holes with reamed holes for 12.72mm in the first 7.5mm and threads all the way through. Made room for my fourth axis for permanent mount and so on. Turned out beautiful. Vise sits nicely and can be repositioned anywhere on the fixture plate. The plugs also fit perfectly in all the holes.

We used 2 1/2 inch dowel pins, a 12x2x1 gauge block held against the dowel pins with SMW movable jaw portion of their small modular vises. Used on my homemade CNC machine using a homemade 1/2" fixture plate. While the genuine SMW fixture plates I've bought for work are certainly a nicer experience of using this system, I am bootstrapping my home shop and using a homemade fixture plate is an acceptable solution as long as it is rigid enough. Put off buying a plate and vise setup for some time. Not even one month into owning it I had to mill .080” off of this brake caliper to get it to align with the disc. The vise held the caliper securely even though the clamping areas aren’t parallel. It is something I don’t think the vise was designed to do but did better than anything else I have and did it very securely.

We run a 96mm pallet system on our machines with a Lights Out Manufacturing robot loading system for production but the down side is the loss of flexibility in our set ups when it comes to prototypes and tooling. We mounted one of the Saunders pallets to a pull stud pallet to allow us to quickly drop in a more flexible set up when needed.

Runout is under .0007" across entire plate. Amazing. The part density I can achieve for the same cost as self centering vices is double or more. Money well spent. Do yourself a favor and install the plastic plugs BEFORE you mount the plate, especially on a large machine.

Overall great fixture plate!!! I've been meaning to make one but this saves me the trouble. I bought this when it was being phased out so I think I got one of the pallets instead but I'm not sure. Even still a great product. The only thing I would change is to not make the dowel holes so deep so the MiteeBite hex clamps have more threads to catch. (I am aware of the reverse side)

As far as the product goes, Im only 1 week in and I know this is worth its weight in gold. So far seeing a 100% increase in productivity. Delivery to the UK was just 3 days! It's a beautiful vice and a must buy for those that have a machine (i have a hobby 3040CNC) with low z clearance. I've been using a basic drill vice on my machine since I purchased it and this is a massive step up in my work holding. The talon grips clamp down very well! Workmanship is beautiful.

Designed some plates around this plate. Very well thought out design, from the tool setter mounting in a mounting hole, super flat for its size, and barely had to do anything to indicate it in. Used some .5 dowels from McMaster Carr as mounting pins and bolt the plate right to the table now. It has been rock solid performer since the day we put it in. Now trying to convince them to put these in every machine and let me make more tooling to expand our capabilities. Thanks SMW
