The Donner Hush-I I love the form factor: the removable side frames, the headless design, the light weight Arrival Condition: o It arrived with all accessories as promised: tuner with battery, 9-volt battery for the preamp, removable frames, bolts for the frames and extra bolts, on-board hex key, a separate hex key, and plug-in ear buds. o The condition of the frets and strings were very good. o The neck relief was excessive, requiring significant tightening of the truss rod to pull the neck back -- nearly straight -- with just the slightest relief. (Note: truss-rod adjustment is NOT to correct high action; it is to make the neck nearly straight.) o The action was high, though playable, and required lowering the saddle height to bring the action to a desirable height. o Expect that when you receive your instrument, it will require both truss-rod and saddle adjustments to achieve desireable action height Initial Testing: o Inserting and securing the lateral side frames was no problem. (I think some reviewers' complaints are picky and overblown.) o Tuning the instrument using the tuning machines was not a problem. (Again, I think some reviewers' complaints are nit-picky, overblown and kind of silly.) I was able to tune the strings without using the provided hex key, but it was easier and more efficient to use fingers until the tuning effort increased, then use the hex key for final fine tuning. o Unamplified, the instrument sounds like your typical unamplified electric guitar: not silent, of course, but quiet. Expecting true silence is unreasonable. o Using headphones or the provided ear buds yielded a tone like any other acoustic-electric being played using the piezo pickup. It was good! o This particular guitar had a fault when being played using a 1/4" jack through a PA system. The Donner Customer-Service Experience o After extensively trouble-shooting the guitar-to-PA issue, I was unable to resolve it, so I emailed Donner customer service with a description of the problem. o They emailed back requesting a video demonstrating the issue, to which I complied. o They emailed back acknowledging the problem, and said a replacement instrument was being sent and should arrive within a week. o They said that I don't need to return the faulty guitar. The Second Hush-I Failure: o After using the replacement Hush-I plugged in for 20-30 minutes, the electronics failed completely: no output to either the headphone jack or the 1/4" jack. o Again contacted customer service, sent the requested video of the latest failure. o They contacted me offering an unspecified partial refund. o I had narrowed the source of the fault to the piezo pickup, not the preamp. So before we came to a settlement agreement, I removed the piezo strip from the bridge, examined it, and re-inserted it. It worked! Problem apparently resolved! Update: Problem partially solved. In the one guitar with the working 1/4" output, after just a few minutes of use throught the PA system, the output becomes a bit "fuzzy" for lack of a better term. I would never play this instrument on stage for that reason; it's strictly a practice/travel guitar. When I run the 1/8" headphone output through the PA system, same story: unacceptable sound. Given the problems with two out of two instruments, I think it's fair to suspect a fundamental problem with the on-board preamp. Using the Hush-I: o Once the action was brought down, I found the instrument to be very handy. o The HPL fingerboard will never shrink due to low humidity, so fret sprout will never be a concern. o I can leave it out on a stand year round, so it's always available to play. o I frequently use it unamplified, and find that mode very useful. o I also want to rehearse with it frequently plugged into the PA system to reduce wear and tear on my guitars that I play on stage. Update: not so much. The sound through the PA is distinctly unsatisfying. Hence the downgrade from 5 stars to 3 stars. o I also hope to use it on some gigs. Update: not a chance given the output-to-PA issue. o The 20"-radius fingerboard is pretty flat, making the transition to my full-sized guitars pleasant -- they seem easier to play. In other words, the Hush-I is a good training guitar. o The asymmetrical neck carve, to me, is a non issue. Doesn't affect playability positively or negatively in my opinion. General Conclusions: o I'm happy with my purchase as it is now fully functional. Update: now disappointed. o Donner customer service is responsive and reasonable. o I can no longer heartily recommend purchase unless you are willing to accept the likely shortcomings.

First time buyer, pleasantly surprised and impressed !

Order process was simple and the equipment shipped right away.

Only problem was the box it was shipped in came partially wet, so if I hadn't been home at the time it was delivered, it might have damaged my piano. This was AFTER paying for the shipping insurance. So get a new shipping company, Donner.
