Over the past decade, I have purchased a couple of dozen pairs of the 96% merino wool socks from the Great Canadian Sock company.
I always buy the green ones. That way, when I wear a hole in a sock, it goes in the bin and is replaced with one of its siblings. They wear fairly well, but they won't last forever. Nylon socks might last longer, but they will be uncomfortable. Wool breathes, and is cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
