History has always been a passion of mine. My husband's family goes back to the 1600's where his 5th great grandfather was imprisoned for his religious beliefs. While imprisoned, he wrote over 400 hymns. Some of which have been found in old Brethren hymnals. His family fled to Switzerland. They were eventually reunited. These books are helping me understand what they went through during this time.

I enjoyed these books so much. My Huguenot ancestors settled in Clinton County, KY. My immigrant ancestor was Mary Perrin (1641-1673). I also have Coffeys in my family line.

Historical novels… factual but often with added fictional characters included… speak to me. In school, history was dry and mostly boring. But in a book, history comes alive: the environment, both the political, social and physical are explained. The interactions, the heartaches, the joys, the growth of new norms are explored. I love learning about it!!

These books are captivating. I had a hard time putting them down as I wanted to know what happened next. It really put faces on the history and events of the time. I found myself relating to their experiences and thinking about what I would have done in their situations. I related to their thoughts at the end about how their decisions affected each member of the famly. Wonderfully written!!!

Reading it gave me insight what my DuBois ancestors were dealing with in France before escaping. I read what their lives were like in New Paltz NY, but in France what was going on in their lives was a big question. This filled in a few questions.

Historical novel of epic proportions! I can't put it down. I read the first two books of the trilogy straight through with hardly a break, and am now three chapters in to the third book of the trilogy. It is compelling storytelling about one family's struggle for survival in a time of religious persecution for being Huguenots (Protestants) in a Roman Catholic world. I HIGHLY recommend this book.

I have learned so much about my Huguenot ancestors. All I knew was that my great, etc, Grandfather Riblette fled from Charronne, France around 1685. He traveled to Palatine and later sailed to Philadelphia. It was all that simple until I read the Trilogy and Call of Freedom. Now I understand the difficulty that he and others went through.
